A Historical Retrospective
The large brick building that today houses most of Fredriksten Hotel is often referred to as Kaserna. Construction of Kaserna began in 1939, based on designs by Arnstein Arneberg. In 1940, the Germans completed the construction after occupying Fredriksten Fortress.
1946
Military Preparatory School and High School
After the war, the building was used as barracks for students in military education. The pre-war non-commissioned officer school and military preparatory school both resumed operations in 1946. In 1947, the Parliament decided to establish a Defense High School at Fredriksten. Teaching at the military preparatory school and high school continued in parallel until 1969. In 1970, the last class took their middle school exams, and the high school was discontinued in 1982.
1983
Army/Defense Administration School
In return, the Army Administration School was relocated to Fredriksten Fortress in 1983. The administration schools for the three branches of service were then merged into the Defense Administration School, and the school’s education department remained at Fredriksten until the fall of 2005. The large building was used as barracks for the students throughout this entire period from the war until its closure in 2005.
2007
Hostel and Conference Center,
Part 1
In the summer of 2007, a private company entered into an agreement with the Norwegian Defense Estates Agency to lease Kaserna and the administrative building of the closed administration school. The purpose was to operate a hotel, conference and event venue, as well as office rentals. The lease was terminated in the fall of 2009.
2009
Hostel and Conference Center,
Part 2
A new owner took over the operation of the premises from 2009. The old barracks building then housed Halden Hostel – Kaserna, dining hall, bar and kitchen, catering services, and extensive conference and event activities. The administration building contained reception, meeting rooms, conference facilities, and office rentals.
2013
Fredriksten Hotel
In 2013, Fredriksten Hotel took over the operations. Several tens of millions have been invested in completely renovating the old barracks building. In the summer of 2014, the work was completed, and Fredriksten Hotel was inaugurated as a top modern hotel with 57 brand new rooms and new common areas.
